Any addiction is tough to overcome and smoking is no exception. Nicotine, by its very chemical composition makes it difficult and smokers make resolutions of quitting smoking only to break them. Studies have shown that more than 75% of smokers genuinely want to give up smoking as they know the habit is not doing them any good, to their health and to their pocket.
Smokers have tried various ways over the years to give up this habit, to no avail. Very often they succeed for a temporary period and then it is back to the old times. It is very rare that somebody has given up smoking and stayed put. Some have given up smoking seeing the suffering cancer patients undergo and that experience has ensured that they do not light up again while some others have the obstinate streak in them and turn to the habit again after a brief hiatus. Medical advancements and other enablers like social organizations are doing their bit to promote non smoking and help smokers give up the habit.
Our body takes a lot of abuse through pollution, whether it is noise, chemicals and pesticides in food, water or traffic. It remains a silent spectator to this abuse until we test its limits of tolerance. On the other hand, it is indeed gratifying to note that the body responds immediately to any positive change in our habits. For instance, when one stops smoking, there is visible positive change within 24 hours in the levels of oxygen and blood pressure. The bad elements of carbon monoxide and nicotine get reduced progressively quietly rapidly as the body tries to flush them out of the system. Our system instinctively knows what is beneficial and what is not. Senses of taste and smell get much better and if one can remain steadfast, the longer term health benefits slowly begin to assert themselves.
The positive action gains momentum within the next 3 months as the lung capacity increases, voice clarity along with reduction in cough and the discoloration of lips and teeth slowly begin to fade away. It is pertinent to note here that a smoker by kicking this habit reduces his odds of a heart failure by half in a year and by staying so, reduces the chances of getting lung cancer by half in a decade. In a decade and a half, the erstwhile smoker is on even keel with a nonsmoker as far his chances of a heart failure are concerned. It just goes to show that it is never too late to give up this habit and benefits are immediate.
Sadly, while most smokers are aware and even make a genuine attempt to quit smoking, the power of addiction coupled with the withdrawal problems like frustration, unforced aggression and edginess often take their toll. Other conditions like the craving for more food, lack of concentration also result and such people have been found to gain weight.
Though there have been other alternatives, they have been found to be equally addictive and harmful over a period of time. The ideal solution is to stop smoking altogether recognizing that the potential benefits in the long term far outweigh the short term discomfort.

Overcoming a cigarette addiction can be pretty tough, especially due to the addicting nature of nicotine. However, surveys have shown that approximately seventy percent of smokers actually want to stop smoking. Another portion of the survey takers said that they have a strong desire to quit. The reason most people want to finish smoking cigarettes is usually due to the health problems involved with smoking. Another factor to some people is financial reasons, as cigarettes can cost quite a bit of money.
Although it can be quite difficult to quit, one's chances of stopping can be nearly doubled when one uses nicotine replacement therapy. There are also many national organizations available on the web and by phone which try to help people quit. The health changes one goes through after quitting is quite remarkable, as it is nearly immediate.
For example, in less than half an hour after one refrains from smoking, his or her pulse rate and blood pressure become normal. Oxygen levels become normal and nicotine and carbon dioxide levels are cut in half in just eight hours. After one full day, there is no more carbon monoxide in the body. It's pretty amazing that the lungs automatically start to clear out smoking debris and mucus, as it knows these materials are outsiders of the body.
In two more full days, or three days after one last smoked, nicotine will be completely removed from the body and two crucial senses, taste and smell, are improved noticeably. If a person continues to stay off the addiction and remain smoke free, there are also some great long term health benefits.
In less than twelve weeks, circulation improves throughout the entire body. In approximately nine or so months, problems greatly affected and caused by smoking, such as coughing and wheezing, occur less frequentl
After one full year from quitting, the chance of getting a heart attack is approximately half that of a current smoker. If one continues to stay off the drug for a little under ten years, the chance o
f getting lung cancer is approximately half that of a current smoker. After fifteen years, smokers who quit are finally on equal footing as a nonsmoker in regards to risk of a heart attack. It's never too late to refrain from smoking, as there are health benefits that are both immediate and long term.
Unfortunately, all together leaving an addicting product can be quite tough. On top of this, there are some withdrawal symptoms that many people go through when quitting. For example, nearly half of the people that try to stop are prone to irritability and aggressiveness. More than half of ex-smokers are also prone to symptoms such as poor concentration, depression, cravings, and an increased appetite. In fact, the average weight gain of a smoker who quits is approximately six to eight pounds. However, a small weight gain is a much minor health risk that what comes with smoking.
There are also some alternatives to nicotine cigarettes which people try, such as cigars or herbal cigarettes. However, these products can be just as bad as nicotine cigarettes, if not worse. In the end, the goal of all smokers trying to quit should just be to permanently stop smoking. Alternatives don't really work and can be just as unhealthy.
Although quitting is such a difficult thing to do, the health benefits are too big to ignore. Most smokers try to stop, but are unable to due to nicotine's addicting nature. However, many understand the problems that come with smoking and there are also a number of different organizations that are willing to help those that are trying to quit.
